"George LaBranche popularized the method of  Manufacturing a hatch to bring deep-lying and non-feeding trout to the surface to take a fly.   This system consists of dropping the fly again and again on a spot where you know from previous experience there should be a fish.  Perhaps after six or seven casts you see him move, deep down, then repeated casts cause him to come higher, and finally after more floats, he takes.  Most of us do not have the patience to do this very often, but it will get  a fish every so often, and it's certainly good practice.
