Sorry for butting in. But I wanted to make a comment on the "local" angle.

I live in a metro area. I remember reading an article years ago that made
this point. Anyone can go off to a pristine lake in Canada and catch
boatloads of fish. The author, and I wish I remembered who he was, argued,
if you're really good, you can catch fish within 20 miles of your city.
That's the real challenge, he said.
I live in St. Louis MO, and I've got access to the Meramec, Mississippi and
Missouri Rivers all within twenty miles. And I drive 100 miles to fish. I
don't have the equipment for the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers...I wade,
don't boat. But I can wade the Meramec --just across the highway from 6
Flags; and an urban park, Castlewood. I guess I'm not yet "really good."
Does anyone have any good "near-urban" experiences? By the time the water
reaches the confluence with the Mississippi, the Meramec has gone through a
dozen towns, hundreds of miles of farm runoff, four-wheelers, canoers,
campers, indigenous and recently introduced wildlife (otters).
