Hi John,

yes, tying with deer hair is tricky, but everybody can master it.

First you must watch your thread tension. If you pull to tight then the
hair will spread to much. Only some loose wraps are needed and after
some half hitches laquere the thread band to secure it.

Another tip to fold the hair back easily is to use a drinking straw
(McD.-Type) or something similar and push it through the hair tips over
the eye of the hook. The all hairs will fold back in an even way. Afte
that you can make the mentioned loose wraps over the bunch and tie it
off.
