Looked like a big trico...  Were the trout eating them?

BYARD,

Could that be what I've heard referred to as the COFFIN FLY??? I've
seen flies tyed for it & that baby looks like what the patterns are
fashioned after. Not much up on eastern Mayflies...for good reason, I
live in California. Hope this helps...

DEAN...

Nope Dean...not a Coffin Fly. The Coffin is the spinner stage of a
Green Drake and is huge at 17-25mm. Also it's abdomen is distinctly
white, not clear and the wings are mottled with black with a greenish
tint. I'm most familiar with Coffins, it being a wonderful and
favorite hatch.

This bugger as been identified for me as a Paraleptophlebia Mollis
(or debilis). It's a very small fly...while not as tiny as a Trico it
has the same characteristic dancing up and down in the air during
it's mating ritual. Neat and prolific bug...but I guess it's not of
major importance in the fish meal scheme of things.

Thanks...byard
