Thom, Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you, I was busy sharpening my knives!!! Where are you talking about the hook taking a deep set, in the oral cavity? My understanding is that you can debarb a circle hook just like a J hook without reducing hooking ability. You talked about the hook penetrating up near the eye - that may be a problem with fly design, no? I am going to try to tie up some circle hook flies on some short shanked Eagle Claw circles and do some experimenting. I look forward to your answers. Thanks, Bruce
