If you read my posts over the last six weeks, you know that I broke my
leg on the Gunnison, and you may have read where I got my cast off last
Friday, because I told you so, over and over and over again because I
was so pumped up at being able to go fishing again. What I didn't tell
you is what happened on Saturday and Sunday. Oh well, here goes!

My son, his wife and our two twin grandsons came over for supper Friday
night and afterward, Joe and I planned our fishing for Saturday and
Sunday. This time we were leaving the fly rods at home, because Joe had
found a place way back in a slough off Lake Waco that was full of big
bass, and had entirely too many overhanging branches, etc. to work a fly
rod - so C&W, here we come.

I had checked the batteries on the boat last Wednesday, and they seemed
okay, so I didn't check them again before we hooked the boat to my truck
Saturday. Bad decision! We arrived at our favorite place to lauch my
bass boat only to find that the ramp was closed because the Corps of
Engineers is raising the lake level 8 feet and were doing some work.
Ok. We went to the next ramp and the next. Same thing. Finally, as
we were heading home, we happened to look at the ramp at Midway Park,
which we could see from the highway. Hey, there were boat trailers
everywhere.

So, we put in at Midway Park. Joe backing the trailer and me in the
boat to crank the big motor once in the water. No problem. Cranked
right up. I idled the boat arount to the ramp dock and waited on Joe.
He parked the trailer, came and jumped into the boat with me and off
we went. Once we made it to the slough, we killed the big motor and
flipped out the trolling motor. Guess what? Dead as a hammer! I
normally carry a set of jumper cables in my boat to jump it over to the
big motor battery in emergencies. Guess what? I took them out of the
boat when I was cleaning it and forgot to put them back. Joe made five
casts and I made six, so I guess we did fish. ;~)

Well, hell ! No fishing today! So we headed home and I put the trolling
motor battery on charge.
Boy, was it dead! Took the rest of the day to charge it up. Was going
late that afternoon, but 95 degrees and 90% RH was too much. No big
deal, Joe and I'll go tomorrow.

So, we got up bright and early Sunday and headed out again. We'd been
on the water for about 5 minutes when the overheat buzzer on my big
Yamaha sounded off and the rev limiter shut our rpms down to about 800.
Nothing to do but go back to the ramp. About 1/4 mile from the ramp,
the Yamaha shut down completely. Yep, we went the rest of the way back
with the trolling motor. Got home and checked cooling system out.
Seems that a bunch of cottonwood fuzz had gotten sucked up into the
water intake on the motor and water pump was barely working.

Neither of us got to cast a single time. So . . . . there's my first
weekend trying to fish after being in a damed cast for 6 weeks and only
dreaming about fishing while tying flies, BS'ing with you guys and
aggravating the hell out of my wife. You remember Joe Bitsflk, the
little guy in the Li'l Abner comic strip, that always had a black cloud
hanging over his head? That's me !
Have a G'Day, Mates!
