What a day..... I was picked up by my friend LARRY B. at about 6 am & we headed off for Oxnard,CA. . We parked at the place I was Supposed to meet up with Chris Brommel last Sunday....
Quickly rigging our 7wts. & putting on our Waders, we made our way out to the point where the straight shore break turns slowly into the cove just north of the North Jetty at Channel Islands Harbour. We had tyed on Chartreuse/White Clousers as those are always effective in most places along the Coast...
We waded out abit & began covering the water methodically... Nothing at first, but after about 15 minutes I had a "Tap-Tap", but didn't connect... we keep at it, casting-retrieveing-casting-retrieveing..... Nothing. We are slowly working our way around & into the small cove. We see "Nerveous Water" Baitfish breakin the surface...
The Tide is rising & we are still not getting a thing....We do, However, begin to spot the Grand Prize of So Cal Surf Flyfishing-CORBINA-working the incoming tide... We are usually soo bloody close to them WHEN we finally see them, that all we can do is a "What the Hell" cast towards them & watch the very predictable"Run for the High Hills" thing they always seem to do.
By this Time I've switched to a BEACH BUTTERFLY surf pattern in the hope that Perch may be around....I spot somemore of those "SURF GHOSTS"...Corbina, they are really getting into Teasing the S*** out of me...
About this time Another Flyfisher shows up & , I Kid You Not, his FIRST CAST gets him a 24" Halibut!!!!!!! I was slank Jawed as could be..... I thought "Man, that Dude knows his Cookies around Here!!!!". He works his way towards us as I continue to ply the waters....We meet up & introduce ourselves... His Name is LEE & he lives close by, has a Great paying Job that allows him to Fish Dang near all the time.. We talk about Fishing, alll the Time all three of us are casting away........When...
BAM!!!! I get a Solid, strong hit.... I strike solid, but not wildly, Lee is coaching me abit...He Knows this area well...He even calls the Species before I can even see it. Lee said that Magically word I've obsessed about for 5 years.....CORBINA!!!!!... And it's A Good sized one!!!! I'm Soo Pumped at this moment, nothing else on this Planet Matters to me..., But I'm matching this Corbina's move perfectly.... There is no way in Hell I'm gonna lose this fish!!!.. Finally , about 7 minutes latter I left from the Surf a Beautiful CORBINA!!!!!!! I was soo Jazzed I let out a yelp like you ain't heard in sometime!!!!!... LEE was soo kind as to take some photos on my Camera of me holding this Corbina with the Biggest Grin on my mug in a long time.. The Corbina is about 19-21 inches, so Lee guesses about 3 1/2- 4lbs.... I gentle released the Corbina back into the Salt Chuck & gladly watch it swim away..... I let out somemore Hootin' & howlerin' and gave Larry & Lee both Hugs & thanked Lee til I was blue in the Face for his assistance....
I am now NO LONGER A CORBINA VIRGIN........LIFE IS FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!
