I drove for 50 minutes(+/-) arriving at Hollywood beach, one week
to the day I was last there... I was gearing up when it dawned me
that my rod tube was empty... i had stupidly left the rod at home,
after i had washed it following Sunday's Surf outing.. Man was i
pissed at myself!!! However I located my new flyfishing Pal,LEE, as i
was gonna meet him there anyway...I thought I'd just hang around &
observe while he flyfished...he had a better Idea. He had an extra
rod & loaned it to me!!!! is that GREAT or what????!!!!!!.
Well I rigged my Reel on HIS rod & tyed on a fly...Lee had hit afew
Perch before I arrived....I tyed on a somewhat white Perch fly..
We hit the Beach and worked the receeding tide (like my bloody Hair
line!!!) for all it was worth... We saw a good amount of CORBINA
working the shore line, they are certianly the "Ghosts of the Surf"..
They would just show up at the water's edge, chasing down Sand crabs
or Ghost Shrimp...thought i'm certain it was the Sand crabs.A Barred
Surf perch hit my Beach butterfly pattern, but he flipped off the
fly... happens alot in the Surf.
I was gonna move down the Beach, but thought "what the heck"... I
walked back up & worked the same stretch one more time... I hit the
perch again(thought it probally wasn't the Same perch) & landed a
scrappy 10" perch...
Lee than hooks into a CORBINA!!!! I reeled up my line very fast &
broke out the Camera...taking shots of Lee with a seriously bent
rod!!! Unfortunately the corbina won this Battle & broke off Lee at
the water's edge...I'm not kidding...I saw it!!!!! such is the gamble
in the Surf....I Just LOVE IT!!!!!
Anyway....the day ended around noon, as the wind started kicking &
messed up one's casts... such is the Surf.. the tally was; LEE= 2
Surf Perch, one short distant released CORBINA. DEAN= 1 perch.. We
both tallyed numerous hits, but we don't really count those...
Another wonderful day in the Southern California Surf...
(get ready Don O. your turn is next!!!!)
