What makes this more strange, Ed, is that the typical wet fly that Hewitt used 75 years ago became almost non-existent in most fly fishermen's box during the last 30 years. Only recently has the wet fly become more popular. It's interesting to note that Hewitt's observations of the majority of feeding taking place below the surface was recognized then as it is now. I think that if you took a poll, you'd probably find that most of us use subsurface flies more often than dries and that we certainly catch more fish over the season with the subsurface flies too.
