Subject: [VFB] Dry or Wet fly ? ? ?
Hi group,
Thanks for all the answers.
Bob,Richard,Dan,Iain,Hans and Steven can you give me an idea of what
flies you like---now that will open the "can of worms." Let's just keep in
mind that we all have different ideas as to what works best.
I like the dry fly. Usually an ADAMS pattern. I use the pattern as tied by
Leonard Halliday in 1922- I think ? The pattern was named for Charles Adams
from Lorain, Ohio.
I think the original pattern is as follows:
Tail: Two fibers of golden pheasant tippet
Body: Gray wool yarn
Wing: Narrow Plymouth Rock rooster neck hackle tied forward and
semi-spent
Hackle: One Plymouth Rock, one Rhode Island Red rooster neck hackle wrapped
together
Head: Black tying thread
I sometimes tie it as a parachute and it seems to work almost as well. If
the above pattern is incorrect let me know. That is how I have always tied the
fly and I have fished it for over 20 years
I do fish wet flies. Actually a streamer- The Golden Squirrel as tied by
Royce Dam. Royce actually ties the fly on a dry fly hook. I believe this is a
streamer ? ? ? Maybe we should ask Royce.
Golden Squirrel
Tail: Red hackle fibers
Body: Flat Gold tinsel
Wing: Red Squirrel from the tail
Cheeks: Jungle Cock
Head: Black tying thread
Not sure but I think Royce invented this fly around 1943. Royce has fished
the fly all over the place and has had good luck. I have fished the fly for
several years and find it works for me. Simple and effective.
Well that is enough from me-let me know if I got the patterns wrong.
