Here in north east Pa in the Pocono mtns we have lots of black bears.
Black bears are a small bear 300 lbs is average for a male, females run
a little smaller. I have encountered many bears in my yard and in the
woods surrounding my home during the 20 years we lived on Penoscot mtn.
That includes physically bumping into one while seeking shelter under a
ledge during a hard driving rain storm. He went north and I south with
my hair standing straight up! Noise and common sense plus listing for
them will do well enough. I have never felt the need for a gun while
sharing the forest with them. The sows will call their cubs and will
warn you if you get too near.
