Hi, went out Friday & got skunked & then Sat had a ball. No keepers but being new to salt water flyfishing still had fun. Tried everything but the best seemed to be the biggest black marabou that I had. Seemed the more it got beat up, the better luck I had. Also a buddy turned me onto a 3 "olive over chartreuse clouse with a gold body & lots o flash..harbor blues liked that. Came home with very sore arms. I really don't care if I catch fish or not..I just enjoy being there.
I went out to one of my fav. places for 'bows today. Had the place all to myself! Took 4 nice ones, all over 18 inches on a rust ConeHead woolly bugger.
Decided to cross the river and went swimming by slight of foot. I got soaked, but unharmed. Lost 1 box to the river gods and snapped my rod in two at the furrel. Now I am glad that I took my "cheap" rod.
I decided to hike back to the truck and saw a fellow fly fisher in the hole I got the 'bows from. I watched him for a while then asked the usual "Any Luck?" He didn't say a word, but held up two of the biggest 'bows I have ever seen! They were so big that they almost looked freakish!
I asked what he took them on and he replied "rust bugger". After a bit he waded to shore and lo and behold, those fish were an easy 20+ inches long. {They both had hooked jaws, so I am guessing they were males.}
He showed me his fly as we chatted, it was the exact same fly as mine, but no ConeHead. He said that they were taking it as he drifted it thru the riffles and runs.
Who would have figured?
All in all a good day.
Del
