I must confess, that the information that I read was talking about using 
the horse tail to make up fly lines.  Perhaps, what is important for 
strength when braiding yourself a fly line like those used in the 1700's is 
not as important for your use in fly tying.  I would think that it may 
still be a consideration however, especially if you can choose to get the 
hair from a gelding or stallion.
