Good Morning, Listers! As most of you are aware, Alan Di Soma came to Texas so that he and his wife could help out their daughter with her brand new 10 pound plus grandson, Jack. Alan could handle only so much of being tied down in the house, so I took him bass fishing on Lake Waco this Tuesday.
We had originally planned to bug for bass with fly rods, but by the time we got to the lake, the Texas winds had gotten up to about 25 mph and the white-caps were pretty big, so we were relegated to fishing in Reynolds Creek. That wasn't much better. We still couldn't use the fly rods so we "stooped really low" and started "chunking and winding". I could tell right off that Alan was an accomplished "chunker and winder", for even using one of my rods, it only took him four or five casts to get used to it and place the buzz bait exactly where he wanted it in the weeds. We fished from 10 a.m. til 3 p.m.alternating between buzz baits, spinner baits and cranks. Along with the strong winds, it was a "blue bird" day, so I didn't think we'd have much success. We must have cast a couple hundred times each, but got only one strike and that was from a little bass not more than 6" long. When we finally pulled up to the ramp to load, there were three other boats taking out also and none of them had caught any fish either, so Alan and I didn't feel too bad ! I told Alan that we should have had RICK ZEIGER along. He always catches fish. :-D However, all was not lost. Alan and I got a chance to get to know each other and let me tell you this. You won't meet a nicer guy. We hit it right off. Seemed like I've known him all my life! Oh yea, I took him down to the ranch Monday afternoon and let him play with my Longhorn bull and steer - Diablo and Calico.
