I still have several packets of Kapok that I bought from
Herters years ago. During WW2 we would go out and collect
Milkweed floss, it was then called Kapok. It was used in
life jackets. We collected loads of the stuff and turned it
in to a collection center. I use the milkweed Floss for dry
fly bodies, you just can't get it to sink. It is a little
fussy to work with. You have to collect it just as the pod
starts to open. The pod splits as it starts to dry up if too
dry, the fluff just floats away. Did you ever notice
something in the air that looks like a fluff of marabou with
a seed at the base, that is milkweed fluff transporting a
seed.
Tale a look at Cotton wood fluff, it is about as close to
Kapok as you will see other than the real thing.
