Just wanted to say thanks to all who responded. Chris had the advice that worked. Saw that ram memory was being used to initiate mail, so I went and deleted a bunch of archive folders and emails with attachments to free up some memory for windows. (I had already dumped all deleted files and cleaned up the disc.) That- so far- has seemed to work.
