Some flies that use the tying thread for the body of the
fly were invented when all tying thread was silk thread.
When wet pure silk changes colour differently to synthetics.
Orange silk becomes mahogany which is a good colour for a
soft hackle body, yellow appears "light olive".
If you aren't catching fish on the old patterns anymore
it may be the fault of your tying thread.
Try silk thread for snipe and purple, partridge and orange,
partridge and yellow, greenwells glory etc.
