Don't know if you've seen them but Cabela's has a folding wading staff like the Folstaff but for about half the price. I have one and it works very well. I, too, tried the homemade variety once. I bought a telescoping golf ball retriever which worked very well but I didn't secure it to my wading belt very well and lost it on my first trip out with it.
