MAGNET TIME! Get a really strong magnet. Mine came out of an old defunct computer hard drive. If you drop a hook, IMMEDIATELY sweep with the magnet. You'd be surprised what the carpet gods will yield. And if the barb is stuck, sometimes you can see the eye and shank of the hook standing up and waving at the magnet!
