My choices are:

 1.) FISHING FLIES,Vols. #1 & #2 by Terry Helleckson....

2.) TROUT FLIES,PROVEN PATTERNS by Gary LaFontiane

3.) TYING NYMPHS by Randell Kauffmann

4.) TYING DRYFLIES by Randell Kauffmann

and, of Course, to round the list....

5.) FORGOTTEN FLIES by Schmookler & Sills

There are other books that are great referance, but these 5 cover pretty much everything for me....The Kauffmann tomes are great for beginners, with the crisp, colour photographs showing the Tying sequence. As Joyce stated the Helleckson double Volume tome is a wealth of Fly patterns, history, Material Information.. Covers me just fine for all the Steelhead flies I could need...For some reason I do not see lotsa folks referring to the Helleckson books...but for $35.00 each it's well worth the investment.....LaFontaine's book...well it's Lafontaine!!!!! need i say more??? A master of this "obsession" who could see things the way they really were & had a knack for constantly producing or regonizing Killer, Productive patterns.... His Books are mandatory for all Flyfishers & Fly Tyers.... The Forgotten flies is listed because of the Historical overview one gets from it.... & the insanely big section in the back of all the streamer patterns you could possibly want. The chapter on Ray Bergman is worth the HIGH PRICE alone....
