JIMMY,

I never stated that you would use your 5 wt. on Steelhead. YES, for 12 to 14 inch Trout, or other fish, a 5wt. is a preferred set-up... Exceptions being when i want to fish Larger flies-as stated, or when i'm targeting both Bass & Sunfish, or the trout I'm fishing over are larger size. Also I tend to use my 6wt for larger rivers & Float tubing lakes - when I know I'll be fishing flies such as damsel & Dragon fly nymphs, leeches, streamers, Stonefly nymphs, or enlarged versions of basic nymphs or Dries..."Meat & potatoes" flies..

I'll do one better on the 12 to 14 inch fish on a 5 wt. when i fish the Lower Owens during the winter & spring, i usually fish size #18 & smaller nymphs and emergers. The Browns there average 11 to 20 inches in length. I will fish these smaller flies with my 4 wt. because it handles the tiny flies soo well... I can put the breaks on the larger Browns, but because the 4 wt. is lighter then my 5wt. of equal action you get more forgivness from "braking" the fish. However if i were to fish the same flies or slightly larger on,say, the East walker river; I'd use my 5 wt. as there are bigger browns in that river, or at least more of them to fish over during the course of a day....

I still maintian that there is a noticable difference between a 5 wt. & a 6wt. set up..

      DEAN...
