This has to be one of the more painful threads on the list. It's probably the main reason most of my flies are barbless. Rix caught me a couple years ago in Cheesman Canyon on the South Platte on a #14 caddis. Thank God it was barbless. It was completely my fault for wandering behind him. My most painful hook memory happened when I spent the summer doing research in Michigan's UP. I got to fish pretty much every day and had caught hunderds of good sized bass and pike, but a little half-pound largemouth squirted out of my hands with my Rapala still in its mouth and planted one of the hook points through the middle of my fingernail. To add insult to this injury, the darn thing thrashed wildly further jamming the hook deeper into the nail. It turns my stomach thinking about it. The hospital there had a trophy case containing all the lures they'd removed from fishermen. Most of 'em were 12" musky plugs. I'm glad it wasn't one of those monsterous plugs and it remains the only time I was happy the fish wasn't any bigger.
