Hans: I became very enthusiastic about furled leaders after reading about them on VFB. I purchased two of them on e-bay from a fellow in California. One was for a 3/4 line and the other for a 5/6 line. They are made from yellow 6/0 unithread. I purchased them with a particular river in mind, which I prefer to dry fly fish with a 4 wt bamboo 7' rod. I rigged up with the 3/4 leader (76 inches long) and a Rio 5X tippet.
When I fished to a rising trout, the leader lay so straight that the fly only floated drag-free for a couple of seconds before dragging across the surface and putting the fish down. Try as I might, I couldn't get a decent drag free float, even after lengthening the tippet. I tried all kinds of casts - curved (which was required) steeple, S curve slack line but the leader fell straight and I only had a second or two before drag occurred. Disappointed and frustrated, I put a regular mono Rio leader on and proceeded to catch fish. I haven't used the furled leaders since. I suspect the water That I was fishing was not suitable to furled leaders and that Furled leaders are not suitable for relatively fast water. I would appreciate your comments Hans. Neville (Nev) Gosling Greater Vancouver, B.C. Del, Have you tried using 6/0 Uni-thread as the base material? I much prefer the thread furled leaders over the mono versions. Have fished the thread ones almost exclusively since August 1998. Cheers, Hans
