I have found that Minwax water base polyurethane makes a great substitute. ( I believe I learned this trick from Gretchen and Al Beatty while watching them tie once(. It gets quite thick when placed in an old fingernail polish bottle and works well when it is a bit thicker. You can always thin it a bit with water. In reading the ingredients, I find that it is basically the same as Loon Hard head..and much cheaper. A pint will last almost forever, especially if you turn the can up on its opening area when you are finished getting some out as that seems to keep that nasty skin from forming where it interferes. I also have found that plain old Sally's Hard as Nails, nylon reinforced, works very well in several coats.
