A shorter rod  for bushwhacking -- a 8 and a half to 9 foot for normal fishing situations (if there is such a thing) -- and longer rod to make it easier to lift the line from the water when float-tubing, for mending the line when steelheading and for surf-fishing or saltwater-fishing from shore.

Easier mends, easier rollcasts and easier one-hand spey casts, too.

the long the rod the easier it is to cast. plus a longer rod is a bit more forgiving when playing a fish.

I'm  kind of new  to  flyfishing  I have a  8ft   6wt   rod.

Whats  the  difference  between   an  8ft  and a 9ft    or a  8ft and a  10 ft  what's  the advantages    and  are  they worth the  extra  money  ?
