Morning folks,
Been up off and on most of the night with my mind wondering and thought
I would pose a question for the group. On the way back from the doctor
yesterday I scheduled one of my many stops to stretch at the only access I
have to a small trout stream in the mountains about 70 miles from here
driving. I would like to post a couple of questions to the group and try to
determine a viable plan of attack to fish it here soon.
Fish type in stream, Browns and some rainbow.
Stream description; Access, from a parking place next to the only bridge
that crosses it. Width, 6 to 8 " in the narrows widening to about 20' over a
rock bar about a mile up stream. Mainly 8 to 10' wide ranging from only a
few inches deep in spots to some pools and undercuts about 6 to 8' deep.
Some undercutting along the bank in places mostly 1 to 3' deep. The sides
range from low ground entry mainly clear to stretches of thick brush and
trees forming "Shade" tunnels. In a lot of places the bank is a steep drop
off 4 to 10' high on one side with thick brush and "Tangles" sparsely placed
on both.
Wadding is an option however could prove challenging for me. Total
distance fishable is about 1 mile west and 3/4 mile east of the bridge.
Now the question, if you were presented with this stream as one you have
never actively fished before but heard good reports about, be it sparse
reports. How would you fish it ? Work upstream first, wading and searching
and having to fish back down stream ? Or would you work down stream first
and then fish back upstream the whole distance or as far as you could ?
Advantages or disadvantages of fishing downstream ? Same for up stream ?
What patterns would you try first in searching , ( sort of a go to for
finding them fly) ? With the shallowness of the stream would a dropper be in
order ? I will be limited to a 8' 7 to 8 wt rod for this stream, ( use what
you have).
Ounce I feel better and it warms up a bit I want to try this place out.
Right now it is just a planning thing. Any suggestions or comments would be
appreciated, I have heard that there are 18" browns in this stream and
Hoppers work when they are in season. I will probably have to make me a
saign and do some rock kicking to really find out what may be there.

Thanks folks,
Jimi
