Thead wraps on the hook shank cause friction. A bare hook shank makes it easier to spin and evenly divide the hair around the shank. If you want to stack the hair, thread wraps help to keep the clumps of hair in place.

Why is it better to spin on a bare hook shank?

Hi Wes,
Spinning and/or stacking produces much fuller bodies and heads because you're able to put much more hair in a smaller space. Keywords for stacking are: hair without underfur, a very strong thread that will lay flat, spinning the hair on a bare hook shank, and a great deal of of thread and packing pressure.

Hello VFBers,

Trying to improve my deerhair spinning and ran across a reference to creating deerhair bodies and heads by putting the hair into a dubbing loop.

Has anyone tried this technique? What are your impressions about using deerhair in a dubbing loop versus the standard spinning techniques?
