I've been tying with 'alternative' threads for over 20 years. My mainstay is dental floss, as it is easy on the hair and is cheap. I also use the firelines, gorilla braids, spun gels, and whatever else works. Poundage runs from 4 to 50. Not many stock bobbins can hold up, as Joyce pointed out, so I build my own out of rod ferruls and steel rods. I use a drill to wind the threads onto deep capacity wooden spools. Griffith made me some variable tension bobbins that work great for the 50lb class, but I still break the line occasionally. If the superline is cutting the hair before full compression, try a little dubbing wax prep.
On deerhair dubbing loops- tried it, & nothing beats stack'n'pack for density, or spinning for quick'n'easy. And I have tied one or two deerhair flies. Don't get the black Berkeley Fireline- the black is not fixed and gets all over, unless they fixed that. My 2 centas DonO ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kevin W.
