Jim, Thanks for you $.02.  I agree with you on the use of an attractant on a fly. If you were to go to the trouble of dipping a San Juan worm in sardine oil, why not just by a dozen worms?   However, Blue River is not a place I would take a kid to fish.  There is a pool that is handicap accessible where kids might fish - and indeed it is heavily stocked.  Where I usually fish is quite a hike, extremely brushy unless you are willing to stumble over a lot of rocks mid-river.  It is not even adult friendly!   I have been known to quietly release fish back into the River in those remote locations - which is my normal practice.  If I do keep trout for the table, it will be from this River.
