Brad, Waterloo is no where near the Sault. Waterloo is 3 hours (due east) away from Detroit. Sounds like you're in the UP. Driving to the Sault is about 8 hours for me.
I think you're referring to the famed brookies of the Nipigon river? Or perhaps the even better sea-run brookies of the Sutton River (James Bay)? My fishing is mostly in rural settings. My local stream is a dam tailwater brown trout fishery. It's a 3 hour drive before I get into Ontario wilderness. There's so much amazing fishing in Ontario, however the spectacular fishing is still quite remote. If anyone needs pointers on fishing in Ontario I'd be happy to point you in the right direction.
