It really does take a certain outlook to sit for 8 hours a day and tye
the same patterns over and over again. I have a few people ask me about
tying professionally, few too none have ever sat and tied for eight
hours much less do so while tying the same pattern all day. If that does
not dull their enthusiasm the fact that they have to tye two dozen an
hour just to make ends meet usually throws them over the top :-)
It's a tough avenue of income

In over 30 years of flytying I have rarely made a
worth while profit tying flies for others, always
this meant tying large numbers of identicle flies,
a sure fire way of taking the fun out of tying, I
now only tie for friends who want their flyboxes
topping up. I will never again sit and tie 100
identicle size 10 flies followed by 100 size 14's
and 100 size 16's. If anyone has the tolerance for
this metheod of making a living I wish them success
and happiness......whatever country they call home.

The negative part was "Don't quit your day job"
I tied for almost four years and lost a lot of time on the
river and in my shop. I was one of the highest paid tyers in
my area and I did make some cash at the expense of giving up
a lot of my time. If I did not have a regular income I would
not been able to pay my bills. I am sure that some people do
make a full living by tying, if you have a following and can
get some big bucks for one of your flies.
All I can say is, if it works for you, it is not hurting any
one else, go for it.
Full time tying is not for everyone.
