"Before entering the stream, I sit on the bank for a while to see what insects are swarming above the water. I turn over rocks in the streambed to see who's living there.  I am not a strict imitiationist, but if I can't approximate the size and shape, color and movement of something above, below or on the surface of the water, I might as well surrender my hopes for the day.  I have tried expressionist flies but they work only on expressionist fish, like bass, who will  leap for any gaudy bauble which they're in the mood.  Trout have more refined taste."
