We are almost to another March 1, opening day for Missouri trout parks.
Opening day at a Missouri trout park means fishing shoulder to shoulder with
other anglers of all kinds lined up and down the stream (see picture from
last year at http://eaglespark.com/images/whiteoakb02.jpg ). It is the
finest example of a put and take hatchery trout fishery, excessive fishing
pressure, concentrations of bait fisherman (where natural baits are
allowed), all of those things fly fisherman avoid. Missouri has several
fine trout streams, but the trout parks give everyone access to trout
fishing, and crowds are normal at the good holes. Opening day inoculates me
against crowd aversion syndrome for the whole year. Missouri trout can see
a lot of canoes and swimmers, but they are still catchable in the commotion.

I am looking forward to flailing my fly rod while dodging spinning rods on
Saturday. With a few hundred anglers sharing my fishing hole, I am
practically guaranteed to witness a great fish story, but it probably won't
be mine. Does anyone else fish on opening days like this, in Missouri or
other states?

Martin Lamar
