Joyce, you are onto the second thing I would try, after stretching.

Here's a thought.
Hand lotion usually has some scent to it.  What would happen if you used a
small amount of olive oil?  I know it penetrates extremely well, and perhaps
it would be more "natural" to the fish?
Yeah, yeah, I know!  Only fish living in irrigation ditches that run through
an olive orchard!
Just a thought. . .
