Willy's Pip is a good extended body fly for immitating midges. I believe he(willy?) uses a Tiemco 501 for these flies. This was in a recent article of Fly Tyer Mag...if you'd like, i can find the article and mail it to you. The gist of it is(was) is that you take a piece of floss and tie it onto the hook(using thread) and twist is so it is braided, then fold it over and tie it into place, this is probably shown better in the pictures, but those arnt readily avalible at the moment. The floss extends about 1 1/2 times the hook shank lenght, and then the rest of the hook is covered in peacock herl. Seems like a good fly for midges if your looking for an extended body.

Hi VFB! A few questions about small (18-24) extended body dry flies:
1) What hooks do you use for extended body dry flies?
2) How far should the body extend over the hook bend?
3) Should the tail be the length of the hook shank in the case of a short
shank hook for extended bodies? Or should it be the length of the body?
Or?????

Any suggestions for small dry extended body flies?
Thanks for all your suggestions and when I get this idea down pat, I'd like to
host an extended body dry fly swap. :) Probably in the fall.
Marguerite
