Just wanted to mention that I spent the weekend on Lake Vermilion in
Northern Minnesota - man, that's a beautiful place! I had a new pike leader
and bought 2 chartreuse pike flies to fill out my collection that I've
amassed through swapping. (The word was that chartreuse was the hot color,
and I've had success with chartreuse spinners).
I splashed some weedbeds with chartreuse, black, and white flies for awhile
with no luck so just to convince myself that there were fish, I went through
my spinners until I had on an all neon orange Mepps #2 aglia - that worked.
So, I tried a Bright Roe salmon fly I had tied.
I was just rollcasting the fly out to the edge of the weeds and bringing it
back in small strips. Just as the fly lifted off the water on a rollcast,
the spot where it had been literally exploded in spray. Sheesh! I was 'that
close' to a darn nice-sized pike. But, that was the only hit.
Still looking for my first 'pike on a fly' and ready to hear any advice out
there.
Paul
