I don't think there is a book out there that has a list or description of all the different materials that are out there. I know there are a few books that tell you what some of the materials are. What I would do is go to your local fly shop and ask questions, if they a good folks to deal with and if they want to keep you as a regular customer they will take the time to help you. Another option is ask about local fly fishing/tying clubs in your area, from my experience about 50 to 60% of folks who fly fish tie their own flies. Also the Internet has tons of information, just use your search engines, and as always there are folks on here who would be happy to help with any specific questions of problems you might encounter.
