I've checked out the tutorial on Harry's page..but want to know, when
doing a green stimulator..do you use a bright green? olive green? do you dub
or use yarn?  Thanks. Joyce

Joyce;
My favorite dry patterns include humpys and stimulators.  A true bright green has always been the standard back east here for the green stimular.  Sort of the same for our hopper color which I tie with straw yellow and olive dun like the real hoppers in these parts.

What I use and what works best IMHO are the colors I use from the ice dub collection.  Caddis green is my choice for a green stimmy followed by olive.  A deadly color so far this season has been peacock ice dub.

Now, I must qualify that I tie stimulators both stonefly style and split hairwing (which I call "Murf's hairwing stimulator") and the split hairwing outfishes the original pattern by far.  This fly is deadly on trout and bass.  The downside is that the wing tends to get chewed up.  I'll give Byard some for the VFB photo collection when I see him later this month but here's the pattern for now.

Murf's Hairwing Stimulator-

Hook- #16 dry 2xl
Tail- small, short clump or elk hock
Body aft- ice dub or crystal caddis dubbing
Body fore- ice dub a lighter or darker shade
Hackle 1- dyed grizzly to match dubbing, palmered, size 1.25x hook gape
Hackle 2- grizzly or dyed grizzly .75-1x hook gape
Rib (optional, I don't use it often)- fine gold, green or red wire depending on dubbing
Wing- natural, dyed or bleached elk hock to compliment body size 14
Thread- 14/0 to 6/0 color depending on body (use a bit of contrast)
