Tying cements are pretty personal preferences. I know tyers who use nothing but Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails. Another uses nothing but Dave's Flexament.
My preference has always been for water-based cements, and I have run the gamut of products looking for the best of the best.
We now have a Winner in this horse race: Delta Ceramcoat Gloss Protect Exterior/Interior Varnish.
This product is available at Michael's and other craft stores, and it's usually found in the ceramic painting section. I think the 2 oz. bottle was $2.99.
This is water-based, completely odorless and non-toxic, 'super tough' polyurethane. The plastic bottle comes with a flip top. I can insert a bodkin through the opening in the top to pick out a bead of cement.
This cement is exactly the right consistency, dries fast, strong and waterproof. The liquid has excellent 'build' (ability to fill in gaps between the thread winds) and produces a beautiful crystal clear gloss. It also comes in a satin finish.
I have been tying and fishing with this stuff for about six months now, and am completely sold on it. Give it a try if you're looking for something new that's really really good.
