While VHS boxes seem O.K. to use, here's a couple of items about them that kinda knock them down afew notchs... First up is their Size... Too big for Most Vest Pockets.. They are too long & too wide to fit in most of the Pockets one stores the Flyboxes in.
Secondly, you'll have to Carefully grind off the Raised rings from the Base...the rings that the Tape Reels set on to prevent the tape from sliding all over the case. If you are not careful you'll grind right thru the plastic base.
As to foam inserts... You'll actually have to glue them into the Lid of the Vhs Case.. & I'd recommend you find Dense Foam & use Pliobond to secure it.
The reason i know about these is that 10 years ago or so My friend James & myself made afew Vhs Boxes into fly boxes...they worked Ok for storage of Extra flies..thought you couldn't and didn't want to store Smaller Nymphs in them...forget about even attempting Dryflies...crushed Hackle city... We just came away with the view that they didn't justify all the effort we put into converting them to fly boxes...
Buy those Plano compartmented semi-clear boxes sold for tackle & everything else..you can get them for around $5 bucks for the too big ones...meaning the smaller ones will cost less.....

I will send you the foam for the interior or you could make your own wooden
boxes.
