You can get some neat colored false fingernails by haunting the dollar stores. I'ved used those for spoon flies.  I've also used the flex portion of flexible straws for the backs on saltwater shrimp patterns.  Such flexible straws are available in a wide array of colors.  But using only the flexible portion uses only about a third of the staw.  Might be time to try the rest as beetle backs.

Anybody tried false fingernails for wing cases? Looks like you could
shape them, split them down the middle, paint them with an airbrush,
and affix them to the fly. Of course the fingernails wouldn't be soft,
but if we were imitating a beetle, what would be wrong with that, since
the wing case on some beetles is pretty hard anyway. Another idea might
be using soda straws by cutting them to proper length and then splitting
them and taking scissors and forming the case. ( I did the soda straw
thing in a swap about a year ago). I'm sure that there are also plenty
of other innovations that this knowledgeable fly tying fraternity uses
for wing cases. I'd like to hear them

Just sitting here watching a pouring rain. 1" last night and forecast
is more for today and tomorrow. Very unusual for July 31 in Central Texas.
