Several years ago, I was fishing the surf off Bolivar Peninsula on the Texas Gulf Coast.
Now, consider I am primarily a Warmwater FFer, and I was somewhat amused (and frustrated) by all the 20"+ fish that were jumping out of the chest-deep water all around me. Amused because it was such a circus. Frustrated because I was a neophyte Saltwater FFer and had no idea what these fish were or how to entice them to take a fly.
Then something occurred to me. These could be some sort of baitfish, and when fishing warmwater and baitfish are jumping out of the water all over the place, it's generally because something is trying to eat them. Now the question was - What eats a 20"+ baitfish?
I promptly left the water.

P.S. I later found out they were Black Mullet and I have been trying ever since (without success) to catch them on a fly.

The idea of floating the salt water in a tube dangling my feet with my bait bucket floating next to me just doesn't seem like a good idea..... Be thankful they weren't using chum.
