I dumped the posts about how long fly lines last and when to discard them. I don't remember the subject line.

One thought to remember is that most fly lines are damaged on the end nearest the leader. For a dry line, cracking of the coating allows water to seep into the fiber core of the line, and the moisture is wicked into the core, causing the flyline tip to sink.

If you are using a double taper line, simply reverse the line so that the end that was nearest the spool and backing becomes the 'new' end to attach to the leader.

A related tip is to use some sort of sealant to seal off the core of your flyline where it is cut and exposed on the end. This is the same spot where the leader is connected to the line. Using the sealant keeps the exposed core from wicking moisture.
