If you go to your favorite fabric store you will find some wonderful threads
in fine colors for tying. There is gold, silver, metallic (Sulky brand) in
red, green, blue, copper..in fact all colors. Also you can find Wooly
nylon..wonderful for making humpies and the bodies of really tiny Mayfly
midges..it is stretchy and will lay on smooth but yet, when looked at under
a microscope, has that tiny hairy look that real midges have. It doesn't
fray like floss does. Also, look in the embroidery section for machine
embroidery. There are wonderful rayon (very shiny) threads in multiple
colors as well as polyester, also very shiny. In the quilting corner are the
hemp threads that make great "burlap" nymphs but in many smaller sizes..such
as 18, 20s.
Remember, that rayon does tend to loose strength when it is wet (or so
my fabric user sister says) but I've never had a fly that fell apart because
that was the main body ingredient. You can also use any of the above for
great soft hackle spider bodies..mix and match colors as for the Dark
Watchett, easy and fun.
And, just a reminder, now is the time to get your thin tinsel for the
next years tying..there is silver, gold, pink, red holographic right now (at
K-mart) and the plain clear holographic flash (Wal-mart)..wonderful. BTW, a
great fly is the pink soft hackle, a bit of pink Gutermann (or any brand for
that matter) in a rather plain salmon pink with a white hen soft hackle..a
killer on the Provo in the spring and fall.
Good luck..sorry for the long post. Keep your eyes open, you'd be amazed
at the great buys you can find. All my mohair for mohair nymphs and dubbing
comes from the knitting shop as does my silk thread..cheaper and finer than
most of that in flytying specialty shops. Joyce

PS: If you are in the area of Provo Ut, you will find that the Cotton Shop
(embroidery thread in all colors), Joann's Fabrics (wooly nylon) and Sewing
corner (woolly nylon) have the best selections.
