Hi Wally,
Check with Johnno at [EMAIL PROTECTED] . He lives in Motueka, New Zealand. The Matuku style is one that he indicates came from British anglers in the late 1800's. I've seen them tied in a number of lengths from 1/2 shank to 2x's. The wing feathers really vary.  Most common are  hen hackles, but I've also seen saddle hackles and rooster body feathers used. I tend to prefer wide saddle hackles that come to a tip and tie them at about a full hook shank beyond the bend. I like to remove the hackle fibers that will crush against the body material for a cleaner look. However, many will just bend the fibers towards the rear.
