Del the oldest book I have was written in 1834. It makes clear reference to a Blue Dun and also a March Brown. The title in the book is Trout and Salmon Fishing in Wales by George Agar Hansard. I would assume that these two patterns were developed in Great Britain and adapted slightly to meet local conditions in America. As for the Pale Evening Dun the first mention I can find using that name is in A Book On Angling by Francis Francis 1867. There may be earlier references to these patterns but I am unable to find them in any of the books I have. It has been my experience that a lot of our older fly patterns immigrated to the Americas with our ancestors and have been modified to meet local conditions. I hope this is of some help.
