Hoping everyone on this list had a truly blessed and merry Christmas. I heard on the radio an explanation of the words in the song: “God rest ye merry gentlemen…”
In our current usage of the words, it seems to say that we want a group of happy people to sleep. However, the meaning of the word “rest” back then was keep or make and the meaning of “merry” was actually mighty. So the song is really saying ‘God make ye mighty men.’ Gives new light to expressions like Robin and his merry men or merry England or even Merry Christmas. Hope you all had a mighty Christmas and your new year is awesome.
