Bob,
if you come to the Sowbug I'll give you some crash-course in German.
And I'll improve my English.
As far as I know it was one vote only when it came to the decision, which language should be the official language in the US.
I'm sure, it was the best decision to choose English. German might be too complicated. Even most of the Germans are unable to communicate without failure in our own language.

Thanks. Unfortunately I still had to learn German! Both folks came
here after the war. The bad part is I have forgotten most of the German
I knew!

WHY IS IT THAT WE HAVE TO SPEAK ENGLISH?

An officer in the U.S. Naval reserve was attending a conference that
included admirals from both the U.S. Navy and the French Navy. At a
cocktail
reception, he found himself in a small group that included personnel
from
both navies. The French admiral started complaining that whereas
Europeans
learned many languages, Americans learned only English. He then asked:
"Why
is it that we have to speak English in these Conferences rather than you
speak French?" Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied: "Maybe
it's
because we arranged it so you did not have to speak German." The group
became silent.
