Yes Alan. According to Jean-Paul Pequegnot, the Bivisible (by Edward Hewitt) and the Tricolore (by a former tax collector in Guingamp) were created in the same period, around 1910.

American-bashing is the number one French sport.

And has been for years.  Back when I was working in a Corporate
Quality Assurance position, I always dreaded hosting our
representatives from our offices in France because they would spend
their entire stay here telling me (their host) how bad we Americans
were.  We were under the strictest of orders to never say anything
negative to our guests.  My tongue got pretty bloody from my biting it.

That's not recent. I left on from that position in 1970.
