My son gave me a Hummingbird Accucast wrist model fish finder for Christmas. I went
out with it to a local pond yesterday. There was some ice, but a lot of open water.

It was fun just looking at the thing. I could see all of the bottom structure, and
any fish within about a ten foot circle below the transponder. It was just like the
books say: all of the fish were holding within 6 inches of the bottom. Where there
was ahole, the fish was in the hole. I pointed fish out to a couple of worm
fishermen, one of whom tried for the fish. You could see the worm going down, and
where it was in relation to the fish. He caught a couple of blue gills, but then went
back to chuck and wait.

It was almost as much fun just to explore with this than to fish.

I was surprised at how shallow this pond was. In places I thought were much deeper
(according to the local experts) I found the bottom was just 4 feet down. But it was
cool to see those little fishes asleep in the deep.
